The Struggle for Land Based Bingo Clubs

Bingo has a very long standing tradition in the British Isles, this is why it is with great sadness we watch the game struggling to survive and operations closing down. Although there have been huge appeals to the UK government to please “save our bingo” they really are not listening to the industry. Bingo is taxed grossly unfairly compared to other gaming industries, how this cam about, no one really knows, but this is the fact of the matter. Fortunate for online bingo operators this does not apply. But it must also be borne in mind that no online bingo operator who offers services to the UK online bingo community, does so from the confines of the British Isles. They are all operating from remote locations, and the reason for this again is the dreaded tax scenario.

It is virtually impossible to successfully operate online bingo operations within the confines f British tax laws, so operators take their valuable businesses out of the UK and pay taxes to other countries to operate from their shores. Surely the Government can see that this is counterproductive. Surely it is better to have 200 online bingo operators with licenses in the UK, operating from the country of origin. The Customs and Excise department can charge them a reasonable amount of money for renewable licenses and a reasonable amount of tax, and make much more money than in the present scenario.

It is a bit like cutting off your nose to spite you face as my father used to say. Online bingo operators want to be able to appeal to the mass UK online bingo market and the Government makes is so difficult to do so with draconian tax laws, that they lose out on any income at all.

I don’t know it all seems so superficial and silly to me, to have these hard nosed requirements of everyone and to be completely inflexible about them. But I suppose it is this kind of tough, no holds barred attitude that made the British Empire what it was and keeps it strong today. It is just really sad to see losses in the land based bingo clubs, particularly as these are the bastion of social activities for many elderly and lonely people in the UK today. Playing bingo is not about the winning for these people, it is the difference between being socially active or being completely cut off from society.
